3D Tracked Ultrasound Reconstruction

The real-time feedback and interactivity of 2-dimensional ultrasound imaging makes it an attractive modality for guiding interventions. However the lack of 3-dimensional information does burden its users and observers. We present a novel technique for the reconstruction of 3-dimensional ultrasound volumes from 2-dimensional spatially tracked ultrasound images. First, we perform a robust calibration using a novel model-to-image registration technique. Second, we define the 3D image volume by analyzing the trajectory of the ultrasound probe. Third, we interpolate between sparse slices based on the position and orientation of the ultrasound probe. Our technique shows accuracy and robustness to noise and requires computation time suitable for intra-operative surgery.
